How to store your printer cartridges properly

Back to articles

If you have purchased a printer ink cartridge and are not using it for a long period of time, then it’s essential to know how to store it away correctly so that it doesn’t dry up and become useless. Sometimes, due to holidays or office renovations, your printer ink cartridge will stay unused for a couple of weeks and when you return, you may find that the ink has dried out. This results in having to buy more ink cartridges, which unfortunately wastes money and time.

However, some people claim that they’ve used printer ink cartridges six years after their expiry dates and found that they worked just as well as any other printer cartridge, questioning the theory that printer ink dries up due to being unused.

But this was likely down to the fact that they were stored away at a good temperature, argues others.

On computerstan.com, one commenter, Sam, says that to prolong the life of opened printer ink cartridges, you should seal bottom part of the cartridge (at the place that has been pierced by the printer) with clear tape. Then, do the same for the air hole at the top of the cartridge (where the tape was removed before being used). Then place the whole thing in a sealable bag, and you should be able to use it even after several months.
