Counterfeit cartridges: a dodgy business

Back to articles

Counterfeit goods are a huge problem worldwide, and it doesn’t exclude printer ink cartridges.

First of all, what counts as a ‘counterfeit print cartridge’?

This is when remanufactured or refilled printer cartridges are labeled and marketed as original cartridges when this is false. Remanufactured and refilled cartridges are themselves not counterfeit goods; only when they are falsely marketed as being original branded products. Fakes are normally packaged in a box that looks very similar to genuine branded packaging (e.g. from HP, Epson, Canon etc.), which intends to deceive consumers so that they pay a premium price for what they believe is an original cartridge.

Signs that indicate you have bought a counterfeit cartridge:

- The quality of your printouts is bad or inconsistent.

- The cartridge packaging looks as if it’s been tampered with or the packaging is of bad quality.

- The cartridge frequently leaks inside the printer and/or was covered with toner dust.

- If the cartridge just fails to work or doesn’t last for very long (i.e., the number of printouts is extremely low) due to inferior components

If you use counterfeit cartridges, the following problems may arise:

- The high failure rate means that in the long term, it is doubtful that end user will save money.

-The printer warranty can be invalidated, as it is likely that a counterfeit cartridge will ruin your printer.

- Paper wastage due to poor printout quality.

- The high failure rate means that in the long term, it is doubtful that end user will save money.

- Releasing of harmful chemicals into the environment due to bad production practices. Also, the counterfeit cartridges are not recyclable!
